So, if you’ve read my stuff for long, you know I’m not a huge fan of overt politics in music, and I try to keep them off my blogs, too. But I simply couldn’t think of a better song for this week’s election, in which the two major parties took a field of about 20 candidates that most people didn’t really like and winnowed them down to the two worst.
Of course, this tune off my personal favorite Hellbound Glory album isn’t at all political in nature. Instead it features songwriter Leroy Virgil’s typically dark sense of humor as it lays out the story of an unhappy relationship in which the two parties decide that “it’s better to stay together, ‘cause either way we’re fucked.”
On the other hand, I guess it could be argued that there’s nothing more political than trying to choose the lesser of two evils.
Regardless of who you plan to pull the lever for, I do encourage you to get out and vote on Tuesday. If you don’t, you really don’t have the right to gripe about the giant douche or the turd sandwich for the next four years. And remember, too, that there are other choices besides the giant douche and turd sandwich.
So, enough politics, back to your regularly scheduled programming. Maybe I’ll make another political post in four years, or maybe things will turn around, and I’ll be happy with the candidates we have then, right? I’d say that’s far less likely than the two folks in this song finding complete happiness.
