Sunday Sabbath: "Fairies Wear Boots," from Paranoid (1970)

One instrumental piece leads into another as “Rat Salad” gives way to the intro to “Fairies Wear Boots,” sometimes referred to as “Jack the Stripper” and sometimes not on different releases of the album. Oddly, I’ve always thought the intro to the tune was a little over long, and I couldn’t wait to get to the swinging rhythm of “Fairies Wear Boots.”

There’s a definite sort of swagger to this song that you don’t often hear on Sabbath’s heavier work – almost a cock rock-type of strut at times. (Of course, cock rock really hadn’t been invented at that point, so….) But that’s not to write it off. There’s a musical depth to the song, as well, as it goes through its movements, and there’s a reason it’s one of those fan-favorite tunes.

So, that wraps up Paranoid. I’ll take a break until after the holidays (as if I haven’t taken a break on this series several times) then dig into Master of Reality, which is, I believe, one of the band’s most interesting records.

Happy holidays. See you guys in January.
